Officer Steve Sheldon was shot in 1985 injuring his spinal cord and leaving him permanently paralyzed. He endured many years of health complications from the injury including serious spikes in blood pressure from the paralysis. Complications from the injury finally took their toll on the 54-year-old leaving him in a coma doctors feared would cause irreparable brain damage. The family agreed to disconnect life support and Steve died on October 7, 2008.

Officer Steven L. Sheldon, DSN 1473, was commissioned as a Police Officer on 12/17/1978. After the academy he was assigned to the 8th District, Mobile Reserve Section, and then the 8th District. During his career he was awarded 1 Chief's Letter of Commendation on 06/03/1983 for outstanding police work. 

Steve was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, a member of Benjamin Franklin Lodge 642, AF & AM, the Scottish Rite, and Moolah Shrine. 
Interred: Dodge Grove Cemetery, Mattoon, Missouri.
