Officer William Hoagland was struck and killed by a streetcar while on patrol on Belt Avenue.

He had walked behind an eastbound streetcar on Belt Avenue and crossed onto the next set of tracks as a westbound streetcar approached. The westbound streetcar struck Officer Hoagland and pushed him ten feet into a utility pole. He was transported to City Hospital with a compound skull fracture and a concussion. He succumbed to his injuries within an hour at 7:30 pm.

Just ten days before his death Officer Hoagland saved a young girls life by pulling her from the track of an oncoming street car.

Officer Hoagland had served with the agency for 27 years, joining in May 1876, and was assigned to the Mounted District. He was survived by his wife and several children. Funeral was by the Masons and the Macabees. Interred: Bethany Cemetery, St Louis, MO.
