On August 2, 1894, Sergeant Michael Gannon was struck by a train on the Missouri Pacific tracks at the Ewing Avenue crossing. He sustained massive internal injuries but lived until the following day, dying at his home.
Sergeant Gannon had been with the police department for 20 years and was promoted to sergeant assigned to the Fifth District just a few months earlier. Sergeant Gannon's Officer Gannon's wife was killed by a train at the same spot 11 years earlier.
