Detective Francois DeArmond was shot and killed by a suspect he was attempting to arrest.

On June 18, 1928, the suspect had just stabbed, shot and killed his mother-in-law, stabbed his sister-in-law and kidnapped and shot his wife's friend in frustration in his attempt to locate his estranged wife. As Detective DeArmond and eleven other officers moved in on the suspect's home at 907 College Street, the suspect opened fire shooting Detective DeArmond in the chest, severing his aorta.

The suspect, Newell Adams, was apprehended and sentenced to death by hanging but after exhausting his appeals, committed suicide in prison on September 9, 1929 by ingesting mercury, before the sentence could be carried out.

Detective DeArmond was survived by his wife, Ollie Belle, and daughter.
Interred: Sinking Creek Cemetery, Everton, Missouri.
