On June 14, 1841 , Prison Guard William Bullard was killed by prisoners during an escape.

Prison Guard William Bullard was killed after being assaulted by several inmates during an escape from prison. At a time with limited staff at the Missouri State Penitentiary at Jefferson City, Bullard was called to the saddling room where inmates were working. As Officer Bullard entered, one inmate distracted him by showing him his work while another struck him in the back of the head with a mallet. Officer Bullard was held down and struck several more times. He died two hours later. The inmates took his keys and pistols, were joined by six others who made their way to the gate and escaped.

A total of eight prisoners escaped. The governor offered a $500 reward for their return.

Guard William Bullard was interred at Woodland Old City Cemetery, Row DD, #3, Jefferson City, MO.
