Officer Warren Jackman was shot and killed while attempting to arrest three bank robbery suspects.

Officer Jackman, 29, was shot and killed while working an off-duty security job at North Hills Bank of Kansas City North, at NW Englewood Road and U.S. 169, when three armed suspects entered the bank announced a holdup and attempted to rob it. Officer Jackman attempted to intervene, was shot four times, including wounds sustained to the stomach and neck, and fatally wounded but was able to return fire and seriously wound one of the suspects. He was pronounced dead at North Kansas City Hospital five hours after the shooting.

Three suspects fled the scene, two in a car and one escaped on foot after giving up the failed robbery attempt. A sawed-off .30 caliber rifle was left behind at the scene. The vehicle used in the escape, reported stolen from an auto leasing lot, was later located behind the Kansas City Waterworks. Four suspects in the offense, three male and one female were captured shortly after midnight.

Officer Jackman served on the Kansas City Police Department since 1971. He was survived by his wife and two young daughters. Memorial services were held at Earp Blue Ridge Chapel. Interment: Cavalry Memorial Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri.
