Officer William E. Wood was struck by a passing vehicle while on a call for service.
On the night of August 29, 1934, Officer William E. Wood was on duty in the Sheffield District. While handling a call at a residence at 6011 East 15th Street, he dodged to avoid being hit by a car but was struck by a fast moving car coming from the opposite direction and was fatally injured. He was taken to the Menorah Medical Center, where he later died on August 30, 1934. The driver of the vehicle that struck him was believed to be sleep deprived and possibly fell asleep prior to striking Officer Wood.

Wood was survived by his wife, Maud, and a child. Interred: St. Mary's Cemetery.
