Detective John Dwyer was severely injured when falling down a flight of stairs searching for a suspect.

On the evening of May 14, 1906, Detctive Dwyer was searching for a suspect in a building on the evening of Monday May 14, 1906 at 15th & Main Streets when he fell down a flight of stairs and struck his head. He was taken to Saint Joseph's Hospital where they operated on him. Detective Dwyer died from his injuries at St. Joseph's Hospital on June 5, 1906 at 10:00 am with his wife and several detectives at his side.

Detective Dwyer, 42, was appointed to the police department on May 19, 1886, to the rank of detective May 4, 1898, where he served for 20 years. Inspector of detectives John Halpin reported that Detective John "Jack" Dwyer never forgot a face and this ability led to him being able to arrest many criminals. Detective Dwyer and his former partner Holly Jarboe specialized in forgeries and arrested scores of forgers. He was survived by his wife, Mary. Services were held at St Aloysius Parish. Interred: Mount St. Mary's Cemetery.
