Officer William Mulvihill was accidentally shot and killed while responding to assist officers making an arrest.

On March 22, 1905 at 12:50 am, while working in plainclothes in order to catch a thief who was preying on drunks, officers fired on a fleeig suspect. Officers located a suspect in an alleyway at 558 Walnut and were taking him into custody when Officer Mulvihill, who heard the shots and responded to the location on foot was accidentally shot in the head and mortally wounded when a revolver fell from the holster of another officer, probationary police Officer George Bryant Jr., discharging as it struck the ground.

Officer Mulvihill's name was the ninth to be inscribed on the original Kansas City Police Memorial. Officer Mulvilhll was survived by his parents, Michael and Ellen Mulvihill; and siblings. Interred: Mount St. Mary's Cemetery.
