On June 3, 1916, Reserve Officer Louis S. Wells, who was also a Frisco Station Master, was attempting to arrest a man on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon when the man fired on him, killing him instantly. The suspect then forced a delivery boy to drive him a mile or more out of the city. Wilbur Mason was taken into custody for the shooting a short time later. In July 1916, John Austin Hooper, alias Wilbur Mason, was sentenced to ten years in prison for the shooting. Records show Officer Wells died of a gunshot wound to the neck.

Officer Wells was survived by his wife. Interred: Fairview Cemetery.
