Cause of Death: Heart Attack

Deputy Don McCutcheon suffered a fatal heart attack shortly after shoveling snow from the front steps of the sheriff's office.

He had returned to the office after answering several calls for service and, as part of his duties, was clearing the front steps to make it accessible to the public. After about 20 minutes of shoveling he began to feel ill and drove himself to a nearby rescue squad.

As the EMS personnel evaluated his condition he collapsed. Paramedics immediately performed life saving measures and transported him to the nearest hospital where was pronounced dead.

Deputy McCutcheon had served with the Clark County Sheriff's Office for one year and had previously served with the Memphis, Missouri, Police Department. He is survived by his three children.

Officer David Haynes was killed in an automobile accident while involved in a vehicle pursuit of a burglary suspect.

The pursuit was traveling down Kings Highway when another car pulled out of Oleatha Street and collided with Officer Haynes' patrol car.

The officer was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver who was fleeing the pursuit was subsequently captured and confessed. He was charged with murder for causing Officer Haynes' death, one count of burglary, and one count of felony resisting arrest.

Officer Haynes had served with the St. Louis Police Department for only one year, and had served with the United States Marines before joining the department. He is survived by his wife.

Chief Paul Fricke was killed in an automobile accident on Highway 47, near Highway U, at approximately 10:30 am.

It is believed that Chief Fricke's patrol car went off the right side of the roadway, and that he over-corrected, causing his patrol car to cross the highway and strike a utility pole on the left side of the road.

Chief Fricke served as Hawk Point's part-time police chief and also served as a full time deputy with the Warren County Sheriff's Office.

Officer Dan De Kraai was accidentally shot and killed following a training drill with other officers. Once the training had completed the officers reclaimed their service weapons with live ammunition.

As another officer was demonstrating something to Officer De Kraai, he was shot once in the back and suffered a fatal wound.

Officer De Kraai had served with the St. Joseph Police Department for five years. He is survived by his wife and young daughter.

Sergeant Joe Schuengel was killed in a helicopter crash while returning to Spirit of St. Louis Airport in one of the department's traffic enforcement helicopters.

He had dropped off several other troopers and was returning to the airport when the Bell 206B helicopter experienced a probable mechanical failure. It is believed he was able to maneuver the aircraft to avoid nearby houses before crashing into a residential street on Horseshoe Ridge Road.

Residents and emergency crews immediately responded to the scene, but Sergeant Schuengel had been killed on impact.

Sergeant Schuengel had served with the Missouri State Highway Patrol for 17 years and is survived by his mother and three sisters.
