Jail Supervisor Egley and Deputy Jason Acton were shot and killed during an attempted jail break at rural Randolph County Jail.

At approximately 0045 hours, a man and a woman rang the night buzzer at the jail. After being let in, the suspects opened fire on the two deputies, killing them both. Following department regulations, both officers were unarmed while in the jail. There was no barrier separating the deputies from visitors in the lobby. The two suspects were attempting to free a friend who was incarcerated. After they were unable to find keys for the cells, the two suspects fled, but were arrested in Kansas later in the day.

The male suspect was convicted and sentenced to death and the female suspect pled guilty to murder. The incarcerated friend who planned the jail break was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.
The jail was redesigned following the incident to include barriers and videotaped surveillance.

Supervisor Egley is survived by his mother and four brothers.

Officer Stanze was shot and killed while arresting a suspect wanted in a shooting of another officer.

Officer Stanze and another officer had handcuffed the suspect and placed him in the back of the cruiser. The suspect then drew a handgun he had hidden and opened fire on the officers while they were standing outside. Officer Stanze, who was wearing his bullet proof vest, was struck in the side and the round entered his torso between the two panels. The second officer returned fire, wounding the suspect.

In December, 2001 the suspect plead guilty and was sentenced to life.

Officer Stanze had served with the St. Louis Police Department for six years. He is survived by his wife, who is expectant with twins, and a child.

Detective Henry suffered a fatal heart attack while chasing a suspect.

The officer and his partner attempted to serve several city and state warrants on the suspect when he fled. After a foot pursuit, the suspect was apprehended. Detective Henry collapsed after suffering a heart attack, shortly after the arrest. He was transported to a local hospital where he lapsed into a coma. He remained unconscious until his death 24 days later.

Detective Henry had been in law enforcement for 26 years. He is survived by his wife and seven children.


 
 

Sergeant Richard Eric Weinhold

Suspect Info: Arrested after standoff

Sergeant Weinhold was shot and killed while attempting to evict a man from a residence.

Sergeant Weinhold and several officers had responded to the residence after the owner of the home called to complain about a roommate, who was living there against his will and had stolen his shotgun.

After receiving no response from inside, the officers broke into the basement with the owner's permission and searched it. The officers began to climb the stairs to the first floor, with Sergeant Weinhold in the lead, when the suspect appeared at the top and fired at them. Sergeant Weinhold was struck in the shoulder in an opening where his vest did not cover.
The officers returned fire but did not strike the suspect. Sergeant Weinhold was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries later in the afternoon. The suspect was arrested after a standoff lasting several hours.
Sergeant Weinhold had been awarded 17 commendations throughout his 20 year career. In 1999, he was named Missouri's Law Enforcement Instructor of the Year. He is survived by his wife and four young children.
