Sergeant Henderson was shot and killed as he responded to a burglary call. The suspect shot him four times in the chest as he exited his vehicle. Sergeant Henderson was on his way to a 4:35 am burglar alarm at Vijon Laboratories when he stopped to investigate a liquor store burglary at Gene's Package Liquor Store, 6237 Plymouth Avenue. He was found lying on his side in front of his vehicle with the motor running and the lights on. His unfired revolver was found underneath his body. Sergeant Henderson did not inform the dispatcher that he was stopping to investigate the incident.

Sergeant Henderson previously served a term as chief of Wellston Police Department until his contract was not renewed and he reverted to his previous rank of sergeant. He was a US Army Korean War veteran. Interred: Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Oakville, MO.
