Sheriff Evans was killed in an automobile accident while in Oklahoma picking up a prisoner. Sheriff Evans had picked up a prisoner to return to Marshfield when near Pitcher, Oklahoma he was struck head-on by a woman attempting to pass a truck traveling in the opposite direction. Sheriff Evans suffered severe injuries including a basal skull fracture and died at Pitcher Hospital without regaining consciousness.

Sheriff Evans was elected in 1936 and had served only seven months as sheriff. He was a WWI veteran serving in the 42nd Infantry Division. Interred: Marshfield Cemetery, Marshfield, Missouri.
