On December 15, 2012 at approximately 2:10 am, Deputy Sheriff Chris Parsons was shot and killed from ambush after responding to a 911 call on Nugget Road, in Mineral Point.

An ambulance had also responded to the location as a result of the 911 call regarding an unconscious woman. As the woman was loaded into the ambulance her son exited the mobile home and fired a single shot with a rifle, killing Deputy Parsons.

The subject fled into nearby woods. He remained at large for approximately 15 hours until he turned himself in at a checkpoint setup near Mineral Point.

Gary Sancegrow, 34, was affirmed to be mentally incompetent to stand trial in 2016 and the charges of first degree murder and armed criminal action were dismissed.

Deputy Parsons graduated from Mineral Area College Law Enforcement Academy in 2012. After graduation he became a Deputy at the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, serving for only two months. He was survived by his fiancee, parents, and sibling. Deputy Parsons was survived by his parents, his two sons and his fiancé.
