Constable Charles Dorris was shot and killed while breaking up a disturbance.

On July 18, 1888 at 6:00 pm, a fight broke out in the street, between Billy Renfro and his brother Peter and a man named Hughes who had just been a witness in a court case involving the Renfros. Constable Dorris took Billy Renfro's arm in his hand. Township Justice of the Piece P. P. Baskett observed Billy Renfro's brother, Peter Renfro, approaching the ruckus with a pistol in his hand and directed that he be arrested. Constable Dorris approached Peter Renfro as he was walking away and called out to him by name. Peter Renfro turned, raised his revolver and shot Constable Dorris in the forehead. Constable Dorris would die from his injuries within the hour. Peter Renfro initially fled, then turned himself in. Renfro was convicted of murder and sentenced to hang but escaped from the jail before the execution was carried out. Renfro was eventually recaptured in upper Ripley County in February 1898 and re-sentenced to hang in Greene County. The conviction was affirmed by the Missouri Supreme Court in November 1892. A petition was circulated and submitted to Governor Lon Stephens who commuted Renfro's sentence allowing him to serve out the remainder of his life in prison in Jefferson City.

Constable Dorris was survived by his parents, William and Mariah Dorris, and brother, James. Interred: Summersville Cemetery.
