Police Officer Todd Meriwether was shot and killed during a failed street robbery.

Officer Todd Meriwether, 27, was shot to death in front of the home in the 4600 block of Korte Avenue as he went outside to install a burglar alarm on his car. He was able to return fire and kill his assailant, a convict on parole for robbery. Investigators believed the assailant walked by and not realizing he was armed assumed Meriwether would be an easy robbery victim. The two men struggled and shot each other in the head and upper chest. Meriwether was found in the front seat of his car and the assailant was on the ground. Meriwether was a Missouri State Highway Patrolman until joining St. Louis Police Department the previous November, prefering fighting urban crime he was with the St Louis Police Department prior to joining the Patrol.

Officer Meriwether joined the St Louis Police Department on 08-28-1989. He resigned to accept a commission with the Missouri Highway Patrol on 01-01-1993. He returned to the St Louis Police Department on 11-29-1993 and was assigned to the 7th District. Officer Meriwether was a U.S. Navy Veteran. Interred: Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
