Officer Moran and Sergeant Jeremiah O'Connor succumbed to injuries received in an automobile accident at Michigan and Robert Avenue on December 26, 1931. The patrol car driven by Officer Moran and in which Sergeant O'Connor was a passenger was struck by a truck driven by Harry Webb and pushed into a northbound Bellefontaine streetcar that was picking up passengers. The patrol car burst into flames as bystanders attempted to rescue the officers. Both officers were transported to City Hospital in serious condition. After treatment they were transferred to Josephine Hospital. Sergeant O'Connor's left leg was fractured, his left shoulder was injured and he was in shock. Officer Moran had a fractured spine and was in shock.

Sergeant Moran died from his injuries on December 27, 1931. Officer Moran lived until December 31, 1931 when he too died of his injuries.

Sergeant O'Connor, 63, was on the force for 37 years. He was survived by his wife and eight children. Interred: Calvary Cemetery.

Officer Moran, 55, served 24 years on the force. He was survived by his wife, Frieda, and son, Officer Lloyd Moran of the Third District. Interred: Park Lawn Cemetery.
