Officer Sass of the Traffic Unit was struck and killed by a vehicle while directing traffic at Grand Boulevard and Chouteau Avenue. He was struck by a northbound vehicle driven by Jean P. Nelson, as he gave right-of-way to east and westbound traffic. Nelson was charged with careless driving and felonious wounding. Officer Sass was taken to Missouri Pacific Hospital on Grand for emergency treatment. He was later transfered to City Hospital. Examination revealed the Officer Sass sustained a fractured skull and internal injuries. Despite receiving emergency medical care, Officer Sass died a few hours later.

Nelson was charged with reckless driving and felonious wounding.

Officer Sass had been with the agency for two years. Records show him to be divorced and was survived by his mother, Clydeth. Interred: Park Lawn Cemetery.
