Officers Claggett and John McGuire responded to a stabbing call on 1011 North Twelfth Street, rear. Officer Claggett was directed to the front of the residence by a citizen and as he walked to the door he was shot several times with a revolver by John "Blind Black" Perry, 51. Perry told police that he had just taken the gun away from Davis and thought the officer was a friend of Davis and intended to injure him. Officer Claggett died at City Hospital at midnight from gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen. In the altercation between Perry and Davis, Davis received knife wounds to the head for which he received emergency treatment.

Officer Claggett had been with the agency for 17 years, joining the department on June 18, 1907. He was survived by his wife: Maude. Interred: Valhalla Cemetery. Interred: Valhalla Cemetery.
