Officer Hunt succumbed to injuries including a skull fracture and internal hemorrhage received in a motorcycle accident two days earlier. He was chasing a speeding vehicle east on Government Drive in Forrest Park when the front tire on his motorcycle blew out as he rounded a corner. Officer Hunt was thrown over the handle bars and sustained a skull fracture. A witness to the accident, T.J. Hargadon, rushed him to the Barnes Hospital where he later succumbed to the injuries.

Officer Hunt had been with the agency for two years, joining in April 1923, and was survived by his expectant wife. His son, Carl Hunt, who was born one month later, followed in his father's footsteps and joined the St. Louis Police Department in 1952, retiring as a detective in 1982. Interred: Park Lawn Cemetery, Lemay, MO.
