Prison Guard Roger Harty was struck by a hit-and-run driver near the intersection of Angelica Street and Broadway. He died of injuries sustained in the accident including a fractured skull, two fractured legs and internal injuries.

After leaving work early Guard Harty was walking as he approached the streetcar tracks. The driver of a large speeding vehicle ran him down as he crossed the street. Despite there being several witnesses, no one was able to describe the vehicle and no suspect was ever apprehended.

Guard Harty was a former police officer who used a cane as a result of injuries sustained years earlier. Guard Harty was a veteran of the Spanish-American War. After service in Panama he returned to the St. Louis Police Department. In 1922 he was re-classed from police officer to prison guard. He was the department's first bugler and appeared at parades and other celebrations. He was survived by his wife, Clara, and three children. Interred: Calvary Cemetery.
