Officer Haggerty was electrocuted by a downed power line.

Officer Michael Haggerty and Officer Tom Klecka were on foot patrol near Grand Boulevard and Wyoming Street during a storm when they noticed a broken power line hanging close to the ground. The 2300-volt Union Power and Light line end of the wire was hanging several feet above the ground. The officers notified the station of the wire and were directing traffic around it. Officer Haggerty asked Klecka to direct traffic from the other side of the downed wire. Officer Klecka was walking to the other side of the wire when he heard a sizzling noise and when he turned he saw Officer Haggerty holding the wire between his fingers. Officer Klecka knocked the wire out of Officer Haggerty's hand with his coat and Officer Haggerty fell to the street. He was rushed to City Hospital where he was pronouced dead.

Officer Haggerty, born in Ireland, had been with the agency for nine years joining May 25, 1914 and was a member of the Police Zouaves. He was survived by his wife, Hazel, and 6-year-old daughter. Interred: Valhalla Cemetery.
