Sergeant Edward Dwyer of the Mounted District succumbed to injuries at 3:00 am on February 16, 1924, received three days earlier when his horse fell on him at Clayton and Oakland Avenues. On Saturday, February 14, 1924 at about 1:30 pm, the horse became frightened by a passing automobile and swerved off of the road into some soft earth causing it to fall over and pin Sergeant Dwyer beneath. The pommel of the saddle drove into Sergeant Dwyer's body causing internal injuries.

Sergeant Dwyer had served on the police department for 11 years, joining on June 10, 1907. He was promoted to sergeant on July 1, 1919. He was survived by his wife, Annie, and three children. Interred: Calvary Cemetery, St Louis, MO.
