Police Officer Louis Robers was shot and killed by saloon owner Joseph Ariotto who had a grudge with the officer and had frequently argued with him.

After reporting for duty on May 20, 2016 at 11:00 pm, Officer Robers approached the doors of Ariotta's saloon located at Cooper Avenue (modern-day Marconia Avenue) and Daggett Avenue. Officer Robers told Ariotto to keep the lights burning on his car when it was parked in the street. Officer Robers then told Officer McVey who was just getting off duty that Ariotta and his bartender had displayed revolvers when he entered the bar. After Officer McVey left Robes approached the saloon and spoke to Ariotta outside the saloon door about the car. Ariotta entered the saloon cursing Officer Robers. A witness claimed Officer Robers baton flew in through the doorway. Ariotta opened fire on Officer Robers striking him in the right and left sides of his chest fatally wounding him. Nine witnesses in the bar testified at the inquest.

Officer Robers had been with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department for 12 years. He was survived by his wife. Interred: Gethsemane Cemetery, Fort Madison, Iowa.
