Sergeant Michael Gibbons was shot and killed when he interrupted a robbery.

Sergeant Michael Gibbons was shot and killed when he interrupted a robbery at the Delmar Station of the Wabash Railroad at 03:00 am. He got off of the westbound streetcar and entered the station while two safe-crackers were attempting to blow the safe and had one watchman in their custody. The lookout ordered Sergeant Gibbons to put his hands up. When Sergeant Gibbons refused he was shot in the arm and chest. His body was found at the edge of the platform. Officer Arthur Saxy, patrolling nearby, approached the station. One of the robbers shot at him and he returned fire. The safe crackers crashed through one of the windows and escaped into the fog and darkness.

The murderers were never captured. They made off with $4.50.

Sergeant Gibbons had been with the agency for 23 years. Both of his parents were born in Ireland. He was survived by his wife and child. Interred: Calvary Cemetery, St Louis, MO.
