On April 20, 1914 at about 11:00 pm, McArthur was making a turn at the intersection of Boyle Street and Lindell Street on his way to the Laclede Avenue Station when he was struck by motorcycle officers, r Benderoth and Eric Burns. Officer Benderoth's extensive injuries included a skull fracture. During his recovery at City Hospital, Officer Benderoth contracted meningitis a week after the accident and died a short time later. Officer Burns was not seriously injured and was treated for bruises on his head and face and released. McArthur was arrested but exonerated from any criminal charges in the death.
