Police Officer William Hoagland was struck and killed by a streetcar while on patrol on Belt Avenue.

He had just walked behind an eastbound streetcar and crossed onto the next set of tracks as a westbound streetcar approached. The westbound streetcar struck Officer Hoagland and pushed him ten feet into a utility police. He was transported to City Hospital with a compound skull fracture and a concussion. He succumbed to his injuries within an hour.

Just ten days before his death Officer Hoagland saved a young girls life by pulling her from the track of an oncoming street car.

Officer Hoagland had served with the agency for 27 years, joining in May 1876. He was survived by his wife and several children. Interred: Bethany Cemetery, St Louis, MO.
