Officer Michael Walsh was shot and killed while investigating a burglary.

Officer Sheehan was walking his beat at about 2:00 am when he observed the door of a residence at Sixteenth and Olive Streets standing open. Officer Sheehan called for help by tapping his night stick on the sidewalk and Officer Walsh responded. Officers Sheehan and Walsh became aware of a second burglary in the area. Officer Sheehan went to the rear of the residence to get help from a coachman who lived in the stable behind the residence while Officer Walsh remained at the front. Officer Sheehan returned to the front of the residence and observed Officer Walsh speaking to two men. Suddenly one man drew his revolver and shot Officer Walsh in the left side of the head. Officer Sheehan gave chase but the suspects escaped.

Officer Michael Walsh had served with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department for ten years. Interred: Cavalry Cemetery and Mausoleum, St Louis, MO.
