Officer Hensley was shot and fatally wounded after interrupting a burglary in progress.

On May 14, 1919 , He was shot twice when he discovered two men breaking into a building in an alley near Felix Street. He identified the suspect who shot him just before he died at a hospital hours later. The suspect was arrested later that same day.

Officer Hensley joined the department on June 16, 1896, and served for 23 years. Officer Hensley was survived by his wife, two sons, six brothers, and one sister.
