Marshal George McCready was working an area to apprehend robbery suspects when he was shot and fatally wounded.

On July 2, 1922 at 11:45 pm, Marshal George McCready and a civilian decoy, walking on the opposite sides of the street, were working the area on the North Side of Del Norte Avenue as he approached La Veta Avenue he observed a male lurking in the shadows and called for him to stand and be questioned. The suspect abruptly fired a handgun, at close range, four or five times at Marshal McCready then fled. One bullet pierced Marshal McCready's left lung and a second entered the right side of his abdomen and lodged in his spine. Marshal McCready was taken to St. John's Hospital. Marshal McCready died on July 3rd at 2:30 pm.

Marshal McCready had been city marshal in Richmond Heights for seven years and was just re-elected in April 1922. At the time of his death he was also the Republican candidate for Constable of Central Township. Marshal McCready was survived by his wife and a seven year-old child.
