Officer George Moulat was shot and killed by a suspect he had arrested earlier in the evening during a traffic stop. During the initial stop the driver became combative and resisted arrest for DUI and carrying a concealed weapon.
While in custody the man threatened to kill Patrolman Moulat when he was released. After the suspect was released, a city worker responding to work in the early morning hours discovered Officer Moulat's body in his patrol car in a parking lot across the street from city hall where he had been shot through the driver's window with a single gunshot wound to the head with a 20 guage shotgun. The chief of the two-man police department described the shooting as an ambush.
Two suspects were arrested and convicted of his murder.
Patrolman Moulat had served with the agency for 1 year. He was a veteran, serving with the US Army's 82nd Airborne. He was survived by his wife and five children. Interred: Helphrey Cemetery. Taneyville, MO.
