Sergeant Joseph Schuengel was killed in a helicopter crash while returning to St Louis airport.

On October 15, 2010, Sergeant Joe Schuengel had dropped off several other troopers and was returning to the Spirit of St Louis Airport in a Highway Patrol traffic helicopter when the Bell 206B JetRanger helicopter crashed. It is believed he maneuvered the aircraft to avoid houses prior to crashing onto Horseshoe Ridge Road. Sergeant Schuengel was killed on impact.

Sergeant Schuengel had served with the Missouri State Highway Patrol for 17 years and is survived by his mother and three sisters. Interred: Resurrection Cemetery, Affton, Missouri.
