Sergeant Carl Graham was shot and killed in an ambush at his residence.

On March 20, 2005 at approximately 5 pm, a passing motorist found Sergeant Graham in uniform, lying in the driveway near his patrol car outside his rural residence just outside Van Buren, Missouri. Sergeant Graham had been shot by a rifle and a shotgun in an ambush.

On March 29, 2005, the Patrol placed the hit-and-run suspect, Lance Shockley, under arrest for Sergeant Graham's murder. He was charged with first degree murder and armed criminal action. A jury found Shockley guilty of murdering Sgt. Graham in 2009. Judge David Evans sentenced Shockley to death. On appreal the Missouri Supreme Court upheld his conviction. The U.S. Supreme Court denied Shockley’s petition to hear the case.
