Marshal John Burns was shot and killed by four men

On April 21, 1922 at 12:30 am, City Marshal John Burns was challenged by four armed men who ordered him to put up his hands. Marshall Burns opened fire and was in turn wounded by the suspects. Marshall Burns sustained one bullet wound passing through his body below his right shoulder and another bullet passed through his left hand. Upon hearing the gunfire, the other night watch officer responded to render aide to the Marshal. The suspects entered a large car and fled the scene. Marshal Burns died from his wounds at Grace Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri at 12:45 pm that afternoon.

It was believed that the men were from Kansas City and that they had traveled to Lathrop with the intent of robbing the bank. A $5,500 reward was offered for information leading to the capture of the suspects.

Marshal Burns had relocated to Lathrop from the country four years prior and became City Marshal three years prior to his death. He previously retired from farming. He was survived by his wife, Maud, and son, Marshall. Interred: Lathrop Cemetery.
