Officer Edmunds was killed when his motorcycle was struck by a car making a left turn at the corner of 29th Street and Prospect Avenue. He was pronounced dead at Mennorah Hospital. Cause of death was listed as fractured ribs and hemopneumothorax.

Officer Edmunds was a probationary policeman had volunteered to work overtime at the Gene Autry concert held at the Municipal Auditorium. He was scheduled to go off duty at 3:00 p.m. but a fire in downtown Kansas City created a shortage of officers so he worked late. He was on his way home on his police motorcycle when he was fatally injured as he was propelled through a snowbank and struck a light pole.

Officer Edmunds, 21, was with the Kansas City Police Department for five months and was survived by his wife, Jean C. Edmunds. Interred: Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
