Officer John Leiter was fatally injured in a motorcycle accident while on patrol.

During the evening of December 15, 1926, Officer John W. Leiter was riding his motorcycle on Twenty-third Street nearing the intersection with Park Avenue, he struck a pothole and was thrown to the pavement. He was taken to St. Luke's Hospital, suffering from a fractured skull and left arm. Officer Leiter died at the hospital, on December 16, 1926.

Officer Leiter, born in Marion, Kansas, and served with the Kansas City Police Department for five years. He was survived by his brother, George. Parents: Charles & Margaret Leiter. Interred: Mount Moriah Cemetery.
