Chief Lloyd was killed in an automobile accident.

On April 15, 1948, Chief Lloyd had been to Miami, Oklahoma, to show off Joplin’s new radio equipped police car. On his return trip to Joplin, he was traveling near Baxter Springs at the Oklahoma/Kansas border. At approximately 9:00 pm his vehicle was struck head on by a tractor trailer truck. Lloyd's vehicle went into a ditch where he was thrown out of the vehicle onto the pavement. He was taken to St. John's Hospital in Joplin with a broken neck, skull fracture, and internal injuries. He died two days later on April 17th at 3:45 pm.

Chief Lloyd joined the department in 1929 as a motorcycle/patrol officer and became chief in 1945. He was survived by his wife, Sadie, and brother, Noble. Interred: Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.
