Deputy Constable Conrad Straher was shot and killed after catching two teenagers who were stealing tires from an automobile. Deputy Straher followed the subjects along Highway 61 until they crossed the Meremac Bridge, pulled over and were changing tires on the roadster. Deputy Straher ordered the two to put up their hands. A gunfight ensued and Deputy Straher was fatally wounded with a shot through the neck. After falling to the ground Constable Straher returned fire, killing one of the suspects, Joseph Carr, 16, of St. Louis, who was found lying fifty feet away. The other suspect, Robert Rogers, 18, of St. Louis, fled the scene but was arrested a short time later.

Deputy Constable Straher was survived by his wife, Barbara. Interred: Sunset Memorial Park and Mausoleum, Affton, MO.
