Sergeant Scott Arner, a member of the Jasper County Sheriff's Department dive team, drowned while performing an investigation in an ice-covered lake.

The small lake of Blue Moon mine pit northwest of Joplin, is spring-fed from a mine shaft and 30 to 40-feet deep in most spots. It had previously been used often as a location for criminals to abandon stolen cars, but on this date the search was for evidence of a double murder. After Sergeant Arner's body was recovered, he was flown to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. He had run out of air beneath the ice.

Sergeant Arner was a US Navy veteran and had served with the Jasper County Sheriff's Department for 13 years. Interred: Off Fellows Cemetery, Neosho, Missouri.
