Constable Jacob Baughman was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man for a land and water rights dispute.

On July 21, 1871, Constable Baughman, accompanied by two men and complainants, R.M. Jones and his son, Henry, responded to a Strafford, Missouri area cabin near the railroad station of Strawford, about ten miles east of Springfield. Constable Baughman held a warrant for Armstrong regarding a land and water rights dispute between Armstrong and Jones. When they arrived at daybreak they found Armstrong, who had been sick for some days, laying on the floor of his home. Constable Baughman announced that Armstrong was to get up and accompany him to Springfield. Armstrong resisted the arrest and a struggle ensued. During the exchange Constable Baughman was shot in the left chest, Armstrong was fatally shot in the stomach and his sister-in-law was wounded in the hand. Constable Baughman died the next day.
