Officer Marion Reiff suffered a fatal heart attack shortly after struggling with a suspect.

On December 28, 1963, Officer Reiff was off-duty in National Pet Shop, on Olive Street, obtaining a collar for his dog that was being trained for service with the department. While in the store, two employees informed him that a man was attempting to steal cash from the cash register.

Officer Reiff and one of the employees began to struggle with the man, who then fled on foot. Officer Reiff pursued the man a short distance on Ewing Avenue before collapsing. A short time later he complained of shortness of breath, collapsed and died of a heart attack. The suspect was never identified or apprehended.

Officer Reiff served with the agency for 2 years. He previously served his country as a US Marine for eight years. He was survived by his wife and three children. Interred: Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, MO.
