Deputy Nat Gaines was shot and killed while attempting to arrest an intoxicated man.

On December 20, 1890, James Cassels, was thrown out of Summer's Saloon, near Kennett's public square, but went home and returned with a gun and threatened the saloon owner. When Deputy Gaines attempted to disarm the suspect he was shot in the stomach. Deputy Gaines was able to return fire and wound the suspect in the thigh but he escaped without being apprehended. Deputy Gaines died from his injuries at 6:00 pm the following evening.
