Deputy William Hibler was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call.

On February 24, 1934, Deputy Hibler accompanied a mans estranged wife to her husbands farm two miles southeast of Cuba, Missouri to gather her personal belongings. As the woman gathered her belongings in the next room, the man, Walter Johnson, produced a .22 caliber rifle. Deputy Hibler was shot beneath the heart during the ensuing scuffle with the man.

Walter Johnson was arrested and charged with first degree murder. He was transferred to the jail in Potosi in response to rumors of a lynching.

Deputy Hibler was survived by his wife, Ruby, a child and his parents, E.A. and Flora Hibler.
Interred: Hibler Cemetery, Crawford County, Missouri.
