Deputy Sheriff Matthew Chism was shot and killed following a vehicle pursuit and foot chase in El Dorado Springs shortly after midnight. Deputy Chism attempted to stop a vehicle for driving with no headlights at about 12:30 am when the vehicle fled. The passenger bailed out of the vehicle in the area of Hickory Street and High Street, and Deputy Chism chased him on foot. A struggle ensued in which Deputy Chism and the subject were both shot. Deputy Chism was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. The subject was pronounced dead at the scene and his .45 caliber pistol was recovered at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle, Joshua Jay Brown, 28, was arrested at a nearby house a short time later and charged with drug possession and tampering with evidence for attempting to dispose of an amount of methamphetamine and syringes prior to his arrest. He was also charged with 2nd degree murder in his role in the events surrounding Deputy Chism's death.

Deputy Chism had served with the Cedar County Sheriff's Office for just under two years. He is survived by his wife and one small child. Deputy Chism's family asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to "Matts Fund" at Liberty Bank in Stockton, Missouri.
Interred: Lindley Prairie Cemetery, Bear Creek, Cedar County, Missouri.
